Saga #1-12 covers by Fiona Staples
a pet peeve of mine in films is anachronisms, and for some reason that applies especially in soundtracks. If you’re doing a period piece then please use music from that period.
but music means different things in different eras. Playing Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” in 1913 made people riot. These days, you can hear it in the background of Looney Tunes cartoons.
Putting “We Will Rock You” in the tournament scene of A Knight’s Tale is a much more accurate summary of the mood of the characters, as opposed to some medieval lute that we’d see as “quaint”
Modern music shortcuts the exposition needed to explain so many things related to tone and characterization. IMO, unless the characters of The Great Gatsby are hearing Jay-Z rap at their parties, I don’t feel the same frustration you do at the anachronism of it.
